What’s the Inverter Generator Break In Process?

Congrats, you’ve just bought your first Inverter Generator and you’re keen to take it out into the wild and start using it. But wait…

Before you do, it’s time to break your Inverter Generator in first because if you don’t it may not function correctly.

And you can seriously reduce the lifespan of what can be quite an expensive purchase.

So break it in first and this article will discuss how to break in a new inverter generator

Necessary Tools and Supplies To Break In An Inverter Generator

  • Engine Oil (Check manual to confirm oil type)
  •  Upper cylinder lubricant
  •  Spark plug wrench
  •  Phillips heads screw driver
  •  Funnels

Process To Break In Inverter Generator

Remove the Spark Plug

  • If necessary, remove paneling to gain access to the spark plug
  • Locate the spark plug and lift up and away to remove the wire
  • Remove the rubber boot, use a spark plug socket wrench to loosen and remove the spark plug

 

Add Oil Conditioner

Place a funnel into the spark plug chamber and add a few drops

 

Lubricate the Cylinder

Pull the starter cord SLOWLY ten times to lubricate the cylinder wall

 

Add Engine Oil

  • Remove the oil fill cap and add a few more drops of oil conditioner
  • Follow the instructions in your owners manual to add the correct amount of oil
  • Check the oil level and replace the filter cap when full

 

Replace the Spark Plug

In reverse order of step one, replace the spark plug, boot, and wire

 

Fill the Fuel Tank with Gasoline

Use high-grade gasoline whenever possible, fill the generator full.

 

Run the Generator for an Hour

Start a timer and run the generator for an hour with no load

 

Change the Oil

  • Remove the spark plug wire
  • Remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil into a pan
  • Add recommended amount of oil per the instruction manual
  • Replace the spark plug wire

Run the Generator for an Hour (AGAIN)

Ensure there is adequate fuel and run the generator for an hour with NO load

 

Change the Oil (One Last Time)

  • Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug
  • Remove the drain plug and drain engine oil into a pan
  • Add recommended amount of oil per the instruction manual
  • Replace the spark plug wire

Clean Up

Replace any parts previously removed.. DONE!
